hyper-v and server maintenance successful. Backup, worked. hopeuflly it'll keep going!
I really want reposts with quoting. I was repeatedly told it's on that list of useful things we can't have because abuse (without any data to support the argument, but whatever), but like... come on. LRT/LBT is a really bad antipattern. In fact, I was on twitter for, dunno, years, *before* I accidentally learned wtf that shorthand even means. I don't think you can try to appeal to large audience while simultaneously torpedoing your entire UX.
I am going to sign off, and later I will discuss with calvin whether or not to delete this node. At this point, there's nothing here I can't get from twitter, which is much easier to use, and the trouble and resources involved in running an instance make everything that much harder to use, making me question whether or not federated independent-server microblogging is even a good idea. Not to mention that everything broken was "designed that way," which is not a helpful answer.
It’s 2.5 screens on my phone.
Since I can’t quote tweet it, this is intentional garbage that makes using social feeds unusable and is the reason there was such a huge backlash about the 280 on twitter.
Extremely great jams at the sushi restaurant.
So there's very little likelyhood this'll actually get seen by any of the current influx of people coming in off of Twitter, but I wonder what their initial reactions are to any of our other deliberate design differences are? Like, the only-hashtags searching, the no quoting, etc.?
So my iPod had a bunch of stuff put on it in March 2013. Do I refill it or do I keep it as a time capsule of five years ago?
Hmmmmmm. Do I need (or “need”) a Mac Server G3 and a(nother) multiple scan 20 display? I need to drive to Phoenix today anyway.

What was I listening to four years ago?
I know Chelsea Manning is on here somewhere, I think she's probably actually active, but gosh if I have no idea how to find her and follow her.
Calvin keeps saying "upstream" and if that refers to the flagship node(s) as far as I can tell, they aren't really upstream, they just happen to be big and being peered with that node doesn't exactly do anything for us for content on smaller nodes. (And, xychelsea is not on that specific node anyway.)
here it is, more directly: https://twitter.com/gravislizard/status/879758601186758656
about halfway through the thread he basically describes "what if we pay one or two people with powerful servers to run a really big instance" but the other thing he says a bunch of times is that mastodon's interface is bad, which is pretty much true. It is nowhere near as quick and easy to use as twitter.
Case in point: had a twitter account for years, never bothered to change the avatar and haven't made 100 tweets yet. That last one might change since I set up cross-posting yesterday.
oh gosh heck it. you can not boost a toot with some more information added? I do this on twitter all the time D:
